The diagnosis of cancer is not always rapid and accurate. Oftentimes, the condition is diagnosed only when cancer cells have already proliferated in the organ. The Big C is one of the most dreaded diseases because mortality is usually high and the prognosis is poor.

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by the inhalation of asbestos, which is a seemingly useless material ignored by most people. It is called mesothelioma cancer because it affects the outer covering of vital organs, the mesothelium. Examples are the peritoneal, pericardial and pleural membranes

The signs and symptoms usually appear decades after the onset of the cancer itself, and is sometimes taken for granted because its symptoms are mostly the same with less serious illnesses.

Diagnosis of mesothelioma

The progress of mesothelioma depends on the distance of the metastasis from the point of origin. Diagnosis is done through biopsy of the patient's infected part. It is screened through the determination of serum osteopontin level and significant amounts could indicate mesothelioma.

There are three types of mesothelioma, the most common type is the pleural mesothelioma which involves the lining of the lungs. This is caused by asbestos exposure. The workers of a manufacturing company dealing with asbestos are the first victims due to direct contact and inhalation of its fibers. This type of cancer is more common in males than in females. This causes chronic inflammation that will develop into malignant tumors after years.

The second is the Peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma affects the peritoneum and the last is pericardial mesothelioma which affects the covering of the heart or the pericardium.

Some studies imply that the development of mesothelioma in one individual is affected by SV40 or Simin Virus 40. In rare cases, mesothelioma cancer definition is associated with irradiation and inhalation of fibrous silicates. Mesothelioma is not a smoking-associated cancer like in lung cancer but it can aggravate the risk of asbestos-induced cancers.

Some of the treatments available nowadays are chemotherapy, irradiation therapy and surgery. But the most effective way on how to avoid cancer is prevention from acquiring it.

Mesothelioma cancer is a type of cancer that attacks the lungs and chest cavity. Also known as asbestos lung cancer, it forms deadly tumors where mesothelial cancer cells form a protective lining over the lungs, heart, and abdominal organs. Types of Mesothelioma Asbestos Cancer

Epithelial mesothelioma is a rare and fatal form of cancer affecting the membrane lining of the chest cavity, heart, lungs, and abdominal cavity. There are three forms of epithelial mesothelioma: the most common is Pleural Mesothelioma, the second most common, Peritoneal Mesothelioma (accounting for only a quarter of the cases), and the rarest form, pericardial mesothelioma.

Lung Lining cancer is not to be confused with lung cancer. Lung Lining cancer is also sometimes called mesothelioma after the area in which it occurs.

Localized pleural mesothelioma is not always caused by asbestos exposure. Mesentery cancer is likened to peritoneal cancer (mesothelioma). Mesentery cancer includes all abdominal peritoneal extensions. Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma, affecting the membrane around the heart (called the pericardium or pericardial sac). Mesothelioma cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers or dust.

There are three staging systems used to determine treatment for mesothelioma: Butchart System, TNM System, and the Brigham System

Butchart Staging System

This system concentrates upon determining the extent of primary tumor mass and divides mesothelioma into four stages.
Stage II includes the progression of mesothelioma into the chest wall, esophagus, or lung lining on bother sides. Doctors identify Stage IV, the final stage, when evidence of the spread of cancer to other organs (metastasis) is confirmed.

Stage II begins when mesothelioma spreads from the lining of the lung on one side to a lymph node on the same side. In the final stage, Stage IV, the mesothelioma has travelled into the lymph nodes in the chest on the side opposite the primary tumor, into the lung opposite the primary tumor, or directly into the organs in the abdominal cavity or neck. In Stage II the tumor remains respectable but the mesothelioma affects the lymph nodes. In Stage III the tumor becomes unresectable. Stage IV occurs when doctors discover metastatic disease involving distant organs.

Mesothelioma treatment programs are contingent upon many factors, including the stage of the cancer, the location of the cancer, the spread of mesothelioma cancer, the characteristics of the cancer cells under a microscope and the patient's age and concerns.

Primary Peritoneal Cancer Prognosis is one of those things you really don't want to hear about less alone deal with. But more often than not, you know somebody or you have heard of somebody having this devastating disease. The really scary part is that you hear about it one time and the next time you know anything else is when you see an announcement in the obituary section of the newspaper.

A very aggressive disease, a primary peritoneal cancer prognosis is one of many that usually do not have favorable result. Gastro intestinal stromal tumors, or GIST for short, is one such cancer. It is usually found because a test is given for something else. More often than not, this cancer is usually found in an advanced stage. Usually stage 3 or 4 is the norm for diagnosis.

The good news is that GIST, once a highly aggressive form of cancer that did not respond all that well to surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, can now be contained with a protein inhibitor called Gleevec. This protein inhibitor acts like a door shutting telling the cancer cells to stop growing. It works for about 70 per cent of the patients that have GIST.
